A political confrontation is intensifying in Gujarat, where Arvind Kejriwal has accused the state government of targeting his party at a crucial moment.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader has written to the Chief Minister, requesting a meeting over what he describes as a sharp rise in arrests of party workers within just 48 hours. According to him, this is not routine enforcement but a deliberate attempt to curb the party’s growing influence.
Kejriwal claimed that nearly 160 AAP workers have already been detained and warned that many more could face similar action. He argued that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is reacting out of concern over AAP’s expanding support base in the state.
On the ground, tensions appear to be escalating. Isudan Gadhvi, AAP’s Gujarat chief, described how party workers gathered at a police station in Khambhalia to protest what they believed were unjust arrests. He said the situation quickly turned against them, with police detaining those present, including senior members of the party. They were later granted bail.
Gadhvi maintained that the party remains firm in its position, stating that its workers are committed to raising issues faced by farmers, labourers, and ordinary citizens. He also pointed to what he described as a growing sense of public support across Gujarat.
The political messaging has extended beyond these incidents. Speaking at a rally in Jamnagar, Kejriwal accused the BJP of long-standing corruption and misgovernance. He also alleged that the Indian National Congress has indirectly enabled this situation, claiming that both parties benefit from maintaining the status quo.
He argued that governance in Gujarat has weakened over the years, citing issues in public services and administrative functioning. According to him, systemic corruption has affected multiple departments, making it difficult for citizens to access basic services without hurdles.
What is unfolding in Gujarat is shaping into more than a standard political contest. It reflects a larger struggle over narrative and influence, with AAP presenting itself as a rising challenger and the BJP maintaining its long-standing dominance.
